Climate Change of Mind

26 & 27 May 2020 - Virtual meeting hosted by the MPI for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Leipzig

Welcome to the event page of our virtual Max Planck Sustainability Meeting 2020!

This virtual meeting is over but we invite you to surf through the pages to see how we did it. Anything that is set in italic letters has been added after the meeting. Please note that some of the pages were hidden and only visible to the event participants. If you would like to learn more about our virtual meeting then please contact us.

Why are we going virtual?

Originally planned as a conventional/in-person/on-site/attendance-based meeting, we decided to go virtual due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Though the Corona virus was the cause to organise our annual network meeting as a virtual conference, the reason is climate action: Going online does not only help in "Social Distancing" but also helps us to come together in a climate-friendly manner. Also important: Virtual meetings minimise costs for the event organisers (venue rent, catering...) and eliminates travel expenses for the participants. A true win-win-win situation for organisers, participants and the climate!

Of course there are many drawbacks and disadvantages of a virtual meeting: people need to get familiar with digital formats and the technological set-up, there is less or different personal interaction. We as the Max Planck Sustainability Network don't propose virtual meetings as a solution to everything but we are convinced that virtual meetings can replace a great number of conventional conferences, and therefore help to lower CO2 emissions. In this meeting we try to do our best to create the feel of a real conference with many different ways to interact personally: Next to the big keynote lectures we have poster sessions, workshops, coffee tables and even a beer hour!

With this event we also want to set an example for virtual conferences in science. Max Planck Sustainability Meeting 2020 - 100% virtual, 99% sustainable!
